Suffering from PMS? We’ve got your back!

Many women experience both physical and emotional symptoms around that dreaded time of the month. However, when these symptoms are severe it can lead to a lower quality of life and interfere with relationships and everyday normal activities! “The name given to the physical, psychological and behavioral symptoms that can occur in the two weeks before a woman's monthly period. It's also known as premenstrual tension (PMT).”*

Feeling Bloated?

It may comfort you to know that there are many psychological symptoms of PMS. The hormones that affect your menstrual cycle not only affect your body but they also affect your mind so it is perfectly normal to experience periods of anxiety during the weeks or days before your period is due.
Anxiety is defined by the NHS as the “feeling of unease, such as worry or fear, that can be mild or severe”. It is recommended to exercise regularly and avoid smoking and alcohol during these periods.

A study on the impact of Krill oil and PMS found that participants taking Krill oil tablets found that both anxiety and headaches reduced by 70%.

1. Invest in a hot water bottle to alleviate cramps and back pain.
2. Exercise daily.

4. Enjoy an Epsom salt bath. Epsom salt is high in magnesium which can help combat water retention.
5. Sleep! Good quality sleep is vital to help regulate hormones and gives you greatest chance to make good food decisions the following day.
6. Identify food tolerances: Cutting out certain foods your body can’t digest properly is likely to help ease bloating, fatigue and abdominal pain.
7. Balance sugar levels: It is recommended to eat little and often whilst including protein with each meal.
8. Pamper yourself: It is important to look after yourself when suffering with PMS. Looking your best will lead to improved confidence so you have our permission to go ahead and book that SPA day!
9. Track your symptoms: Tracking your symptoms is a great way to understand what is considered normal for you and your body.
10. Open up about PMS. It feels great to talk so don’t be shy and open up to your GP, family or friends.
