What we can tell you
There are no authorised UK health claims for digestive enzymes, so you will not find any on this page. What we can give you is the full composition — every enzyme, its weight and its measured activity — which is what actually allows a comparison between products.
Gold or the standard Enzyme Blend?
Gold is not simply a stronger version. It is weighted differently, and on one enzyme it is lower.

Identical on amylase and lactase. Substantially higher on protease, lipase and bromelain. Lower on cellulase. If cellulase activity is what matters to you, the standard Blend has more of it and costs less.
Why three proteases
Enzymes have a pH at which they are most active, and the digestive tract is not one environment — it runs from strongly acidic in the stomach to near-neutral further along.
The numbers in Protease 3.0, 4.5 and 6.0 refer to those pH optima. Including three rather than one gives the formula protease activity across a wider pH range instead of a single band. Bromelain, a protease derived from pineapple, is a fourth protein-acting enzyme alongside them.
The nine enzymes and what they act on
-
Protease 3.0, Protease 4.5, Protease 6.0 — proteins, across different pH ranges
-
Bromelain — proteins (pineapple-derived protease)
-
Lipase — fats
-
Alpha-amylase — starches
-
Lactase — lactose, the sugar in milk
-
Alpha-galactosidase — oligosaccharides: the complex carbohydrates in beans, pulses, lentils and brassicas
-
Cellulase — cellulose, the fibre in plant cell walls
Worth being precise about one thing: alpha-galactosidase is a carbohydrase, not a protease. It acts on complex sugars, which is why it is of particular interest to anyone eating large amounts of pulses and plant fibre.
How to take it
One capsule before meals, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. For a heavy meal, a second capsule may be taken during the meal. Capsules may be opened onto food, provided the food is not hot. In case of ulcer, do not take on an empty stomach.
Common questions
Why is it more expensive than the standard Blend?
Higher declared activity on protease, lipase and bromelain, and three proteases instead of one.
Is it a straight upgrade?
No. It has less cellulase than the standard Blend, and the same amylase and lactase.
What does the number after Protease mean?
The pH at which that particular protease is most active.
Does it need refrigerating?
No. Store in a cool, dry place.
Is alpha-galactosidase a protein enzyme?
No — it acts on oligosaccharides, the complex carbohydrates in beans, lentils and brassicas.
