Bisglycinate or glycinate — what's the difference?
There isn't one. They are two names for the same compound.
"Bisglycinate" is the chemically precise name: bis means two, and the magnesium is bound to two molecules of glycine. "Glycinate" is the shortened form that most brands and most shoppers use. If you have been looking for magnesium glycinate, this is it.
You may also see it written as magnesium bisglycinate chelate, magnesium diglycinate, or magnesium glycine chelate. All describe the same magnesium-and-glycine compound.
What chelated magnesium means
Magnesium never appears on its own in a supplement. It is a reactive metal, so it always arrives bound to something else — an oxide, a citrate, a carbonate, or in this case an amino acid. What it is bound to is the single biggest difference between magnesium products on a shelf.
Chelation means the magnesium is held within an organic molecule rather than paired with a simple inorganic salt. Here, two glycine molecules wrap around each magnesium ion. Glycine is the smallest of the amino acids and a normal component of dietary protein.
One practical consequence: the compound is heavy relative to the magnesium inside it. Each capsule provides 77mg of elemental magnesium, and the rest of the capsule weight is the glycine carrier. This is why, when comparing magnesium supplements, the figures that matter are the elemental magnesium and the %RI — never the large milligram number on the front of the jar, which usually describes the compound rather than the mineral.
