Magnesium Bicarbonate Water and why you should be drinking it...

Magnesium is a vital nutrient we need in our diets, but it’s one that can often be neglected. Our bodies should also be trying to maintain the correct balanced pH level (7.4) to be able to assimilate vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients effectively.

Luckily, magnesium bicarbonate water is a drink that can give you your daily intake of magnesium, whilst also helping to balance the pH level in your body. You may be wondering why magnesium is even necessary, so this guide will break down why magnesium is essential and why bicarbonate water is the ideal source. We’ve also included a step-by-step guide for making your own magnesium bicarbonate – so you can give it a try for yourself!

Benefits of Magnesium

Magnesium is needed for over 300 biochemical reactions in the body, and it plays a critical role in a variety of bodily functions, for example, magnesium helps to maintain muscle and nerve function whilst also playing a role in bone growth. It is a nutrient which you need to stay healthy, as magnesium is important for your body and your brain.

Actively taking the recommended daily amount of magnesium can give you a range of benefits. It may help boost performance during exercise and thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties, it can help aid a faster recovery. Magnesium can also help lower blood pressure, and has been shown to improve cognitive function, due to the critical role it plays in the brain; this also links to potentially reducing the symptoms of depression and elevating low moods.

Ideally, we’d get enough magnesium in our daily diet. Foods like almonds, nuts, dark chocolate, bananas, seeds and spinach are all food sources rich in magnesium; however, you can also use a food supplement such as One Nutrition Ocean Mag, which can be added to sparkling water to form magnesium bicarbonate.

Why Bicarbonate is a Preferred Form of Magnesium

Magnesium is one of the more common deficiencies worldwide, so it’s important to recognise when you are running low.

One simple solution for a quick fix is to consume magnesium bicarbonate water.

Not only does magnesium bicarbonate give you your necessary daily intake of magnesium, but the sparkling water helps to balance out the pH levels in your body. Humans need to maintain a slightly alkaline pH level of 7.4 to function optimally, however, most of the food we consume has an acidifying effect on our bodies. Magnesium bicarbonate can help to alkalize your body and bring your pH level to the optimum level.

The other benefit of magnesium bicarbonate is that it’s incredibly simple to make yourself! All you need is a bottle of sparkling mineral water and some magnesium hydroxide powder.

How to Make Magnesium Bicarbonate

  1. Place a plastic bottle of sparkling mineral water in the fridge for around 30 minutes until it’s chilled.
  2. Take the bottle of water out of the fridge steadily without shaking it up and pour around 100ml of water out.
  3. Place the bottle on its side, unscrew the cap and add in ¼ teaspoon of magnesium hydroxide powder. Quickly put the cap back on and shake the bottle for around 60 seconds.
  4. Put the bottle back into the fridge to chill for around 30 minutes.
  5. Take the bottle out and shake it around for another 60 seconds.
  6. Wait another 30 minutes and then your magnesium bicarbonate should be fully formed.

It’s recommended that you only drink a small amount, as too much can cause digestive issues. A small glass of magnesium bicarbonate in the morning and one in the evening is sufficient to give you all the health benefits.

If you don’t think you’re getting enough magnesium in your diet, and you’re concerned you might be consuming too many acidic foods – magnesium bicarbonate can be the ideal solution to help balance things out.
